About leioa
Leioa is an open-air nature classroom, surrounded by countryside and parks, close to the sea and Bilbao, on the Estuary of the Nervión Sound.
Leioa, which currently has a population of around 32,000, was once a rural town with farmhouses devoted to livestock farming and cultivating the land.
Throughout its history, it has had two well-differentiated populated areas:
- Baserri, comprising the rural area, and
- Marinerri, or the sea district, is located between the river Gobela and the Bilbao Sound comprising the districts of Artaza, Ondiz, Udondo, Aketxe and Lamiako.

Diverse Leioa
Every one of the districts contributes its personality, landscape and traditions to the town’s layout.
Zuhatzu, Peruri, Sarriena, Santsoena and Lertutze are its upper districts, far from the Nervión Sound, offering incredible landscapes and breathtaking panoramic views.
Starting from there, and towards the town centre, we come across the districts of: Tellería, Basaiz, Artatzagana and Aldekoena, as well as the rural area of Santi Mami.
You can have a great time in the centre in Elexalde, Iturribide, Donibane-San Juan, Ikea, Mendibil and Udondo.
While in the districts closest to the Sound, you can learn about the history and mythological traditions of Leioa thanks to the districts of Ibaiondo-Santa Ana, Pinueta, Lamiako-Txopoeta, Txorierri, Ondiz and Aketxe”.
Green Leioa
